Quality Firewood

We often get asked what is the best quality wood to burn. There are many types available and with a multitude of wood burner appliances now available for your home, it’s an important decision.

Quality Firewood

When we talk about quality, your main concern is all about the moisture content of the logs. Basically, the drier the firewood the better the logs will burn. Wood that is cut straight from the tree will be around 60 – 70% in moisture content depending on the species of tree and the area it is sourced from.

Our Kiln dried logs are dried to a moisture content below 20%, which ensures a clean burn. A good indication that your buring a ‘Wet’ log would be a build-up of carbon deposits within your flu and residue left on your log burner glass door after continued burning.

At Logan’s Logs™, we harvest, split and kiln dry all of our logs to perfection ensuring you receive your logs with exactly the right moisture content.

Seasoned & Part Seasoned Firewood

Seasoning logs naturally can take quite a long time, two years in some cases. We always urge customers to be careful when purchasing wood and get a full understanding of where the logs are sourced from as well as the moisture content they contain. If you are unsure of a logs moisture level, please purchase a moisture meter from ourselves or any reputable firewood supply store. This way, checking the moisture content will be quick and easy and of course you will avoid any damage to your Flu or appliance by burning wet wood.

So, what’s the best, Hardwood or Softwood?

The simple answer is they are both as good to burn providing they have the proper moisture content. Softwood (Larch, Pine, Douglas Fir) being less dense will naturally burn quicker than Hardwoods (Ash, Birch, Oak, Beech, Cherry) but gives the same heat output per kg. This in turn will mean that you will need more softwood logs to achieve the same heat output as the hardwood over time.

Oak Logs
Oak is an extremely dense wood and takes a longer period to dry through but in turn creates a great log for burning. Being so dense, it can take a little practice to get the fire started initially. Once you have good base established this firewood can provide a long, steady burn.

Ash Logs
Ash is our most popular wood to burn. It dries quite quickly and is dense enough to give a long lasting burn and importantly a high heat output. It also has a very pleasing flame effect.

Silver Birch Logs
Birch burns very much like Ash, although it does burn slightly quicker. It is a good burning wood that produces a consistent and long heat output. It has a very bright flame effect.

Softwood Logs
As stated above. Softwood is less dense than hardwood and although you can still get a good heat output, softwood will burn faster and you will need to re-stock your wood burner more frequently.

Getting the Fire Started

Kindling & Firelighters

Choose from our range of affordable firelighters and kindling (sticks). Use these to build your fire before adding kiln dried logs.

Products like Wood Wool Firelighters are designed to ignite very easily when presented with a burning match and softwood kindling combusts easily in the early stages of your fire creating the necessary heat to burn larger hardwood logs later on. Our kiln dried logs are perfect for use in wood burners, providing a clean and efficient burn.
