Hardwood Logs
Learn more about hardwoods and their uses as fuel for heating your home with a wood burning stove.
We only sell hardwood kiln dried logs. Hardwoods are very dense in nature which makes them excellent for hardwood flooring, furniture, building materials and for use as fuel.
Because hardwood firewood is dense, it burns hotter for longer producing more heat from your fire.
Here at Logan's Logs we specialise in the sale of kiln dried firewood so our main aim is to supply customers in Cornwall and Plymouth with high quality kiln dried logs that will reliably and efficiently heat your home and the way to do that is to supply hardwoods.

Species of Hardwood Kiln Dried Logs
Primarily hardwood timber is available to burn as Ash, Oak, Birch and to a lesser extent, Alder. Sometimes we can source Beech too but it's less regular. If you live in Cornwall or Plymouth we can do a quick delivery from our wood yard or any of these species of kiln dried logs.
Other hardwood species include Elm, Hornbeam and Yew, but these timbers are much less commonly sold as firewood because the trees are either protected, slow-growing, or prone to disease, making them unsuitable or unsustainable for regular harvesting.
In the UK we have a range of native hardwood species suited to temperate regions.
Hardwoods vs Softwoods
Hardwoods grow slowly, softwoods grow quickly. That in a nutshell is the main difference. Because the softwoods grow faster they have less time to develop density in their cell structure. Trees such as pines will be lighter and if you have ever burned softwoods you'll know they last mere moments in your stove.
Some short-life garden furniture and simple sheds are often made of softer woods because they are cheaper but offer less structural capability. Indoors, you'll often find fittings in your home are made of softwoods such as skirting boards and architrave. Hardwoods will have a much longer life in outdoors projects such as decking or high quality fencing.
When it comes to logs, your hardwood firewood will burn hotter for longer and your pine logs will disappear in smoke much faster. Because hardwood logs are more capable of outputting heat they are more efficient to burn which is kinder to the environment.
Although softwoods burn quickly they are very easy to ignite. That's why they are perfect as kindling which you can use to get your fire started.
Uses as Kiln Dried Firewood
Hardwoods are kiln dried in ovens to reduce the moisture content to below 18%. Having less moisture in the log means it will burn hotter and emit less smoke. This is good for air quality and your pocket.
You can buy seasoned wood and any timber can be seasoned whether it is hard or soft. Seasoned wood is simple timber that has been left to age since the tree was cut down. It's true that green wood should not be burned. When a tree is felled for firewood, the wood is first seasoned so it is no longer green and should then be kiln dried to reduce the moisture content to a very low level.
The combination of kiln drying and hardwood makes timber absolutely perfect for use as firewood. All of the wood we sell is Woodsure Approved and Ready to Burn.
Storing Firewood
Wood should be stored off the ground in a well ventilated area to ensure it remains dry. An open log store is often sufficient but a garage or covered store is preferred.

Hardwood Uses in Cooking
Once dried (as above), hardwoods burn extremely hot which makes them perfect for cooking. When you are trying to cook pizza, for example, in a wood-fired pizza oven you need a steady supply of heat from your wood
In Cornwall we supply a number of pizza makers with hardwood cooking wood where each log is cut to a smaller size which makes it easier to insert into the pizza oven.
