In simple terms, making kiln dried wood means stacking cut logs in a kiln and using circulating warm air to draw moisture from deep inside the timber until it becomes ready to burn.

The purpose is simple: create firewood that burns hotter, cleaner and more efficiently than naturally seasoned wood, with consistent quality in a much shorter time. What Is a Firewood Kiln?

A firewood kiln is essentially a large insulated drying chamber. Imagine a giant oven, except instead of cooking the wood, its purpose is to encourage moisture to evaporate gradually. The product is kiln dried wood from a wood drying kiln.

A typical commercial kiln consists of:

  • An insulated building or shipping-container style chamber

  • Powerful circulation fans

  • Heating system

  • Temperature and humidity sensors

  • Air vents or dehumidification equipment

  • Computer controls that regulate the drying cycle in a controlled drying process

Logs are normally stacked in crates or cages with gaps between them so warm air can flow around every piece of timber for good air circulation.

Unlike seasoning outdoors, where drying depends entirely on the weather, a kiln provides the same drying conditions every day of the year, which is one of the key differences between these drying methods.

How Does Kiln Drying Actually Work?

Freshly cut green wood contains enormous amounts of water.

Depending on the species, freshly felled hardwood can contain 40–70% moisture, while some softwoods contain even more.

The kiln drying process works in four stages.

1. Warm Air Is Generated

The kiln raises the air temperature by circulating hot air at high temperatures, usually somewhere between 45°C and 80°C depending on the timber species and the drying programme, and some systems use electric heaters as the heat source for this stage.

The objective isn't to bake the logs, so the intense heat is controlled rather than excessive.

Instead, warmer air can hold much more water vapour than cold air.

2. Moisture Moves Towards the Surface

As the wood warms up, water inside the cells begins migrating towards the outside of each log.

The water doesn't instantly disappear.

It slowly travels through the timber structure before reaching the surface.

This stage takes time because hardwood is naturally dense. Operators monitor moisture levels so each log reaches low moisture content evenly and finishes with reliably low moisture.

3. Powerful Fans Remove Moist Air

Fans in a large kiln continually circulate air around every stack of logs.

Moving air is critical because it keeps hot air moving evenly.

Without airflow, the air immediately surrounding each log would quickly become saturated with moisture and drying would almost stop.

An industrial kiln can move tens of thousands of cubic metres of air every hour.

4. Moist Air Is Removed

The humid air is either:

  • passed through a dehumidification system which removes the water before reheating the air.

Why Not Simply Use Higher Temperatures?

People often ask:

"Why not heat the kiln to 150°C and dry everything in one day?"

Wood doesn't dry evenly.

If the outside dries too quickly while the centre remains wet, the logs can:

  • split badly

  • crack

  • warp

  • develop internal stresses

  • become difficult to burn evenly

Professional kilns therefore follow carefully controlled drying schedules rather than simply applying maximum heat.

Does Kiln Drying Kill Insects?

Yes. One major advantage of kiln drying is that sustained elevated temperatures kill:

  • wood-boring insects

  • larvae

  • many fungi

  • mould spores

This is particularly important when transporting timber internationally, where heat treatment helps prevent invasive pests from spreading.

How Does This Compare With Traditional Seasoning?

Seasoning relies entirely on:

Who Invented Kiln Drying?

The idea of artificially drying wood is much older than many people realise.

People have attempted to dry timber using heated buildings for hundreds of years, particularly for furniture making and shipbuilding.

However, these early methods were inconsistent and often damaged the timber.

The first practical timber drying kilns began appearing during the early to mid-19th century, as industrial steam power made it possible to produce reliable, controlled heat. Steam-heated drying rooms became increasingly common in sawmills, especially in Europe and North America, where there was growing demand for stable timber for construction, railway carriages and furniture.

By the late 1800s, engineers had developed purpose-built lumber kilns with controlled ventilation, and throughout the 20th century they became increasingly sophisticated with automatic controls for temperature, humidity and airflow. These advances were aimed at drying construction timber efficiently while reducing defects such as warping and splitting.

Was Kiln Drying Originally Developed for Firewood?

No. Kiln drying was pioneered for construction timber and woodworking, not for firewood.

Builders, cabinet makers and furniture manufacturers needed wood that would remain stable indoors. If timber retained too much moisture, it would shrink, twist or split after installation.

Only much later, as wood-burning stoves became more popular and clean-burning standards tightened, did kiln drying become widely adopted for domestic firewood.

Why Is Kiln Drying So Popular Today?

A wood burning appliance performs best with dry fuel.

Lower moisture content means:

  • easier lighting when burning wood

  • more heat output from every log

  • less smoke

  • fewer chimney deposits

  • cleaner glass on wood-burning stoves

  • more reliable performance in a wood burning stove, wood burner, open fire, and open fireplaces, helping each produce a cleaner, more reliable fire

Properly dried logs with low moisture levels burn efficiently, support an efficient burn, create minimal smoke, and reduce creosote buildup that is more common with wood that has high moisture content.

With the same amount of dry wood, you get high heat output and may need fewer logs or less wood overall.

This can also reduce the frequency of chimney sweeping.
