Product Description

Buy Smokeless Coal Online in Cornwall & Plymouth

Smokeless fuel for your multi fuel stove or open fire at home. This 20kg bag of smokeless coal by Charles Swann is a manufactured smokeless ovoid suitable for use in smoke control areas. The coal has a very high heat output and produces very little residual ash.

Unlike traditional house coal, this smokeless coal glows red hot without creating sparks, spit or smoke. It burns extremely hot, consistently and for a long time.

Read our guide: How to Start a Coal Fire for tips and advice on how to get your smokeless coals glowing.

Smokeless Fuel Suitable For Open Fires

Coal of this kind is particularly suited to open fires. It has an attractive long lasting flame and once glowing, requires very little attention. Open fires are not really suitable for kiln dried logs because they burn much hotter in the airflow controlled environment of a wood burning stove, that's where the smokeless fuels such as coal and anthracite come in.

Coal produces a great deal of heat and the burn is easily controlled which makes it perfect for an open fire with a fire guard. Coal is not so well suited to closed appliances like wood burning stoves but can be used in a multi fuel stove.

VAT on Coal

Coal and the Environment

Traditional bituminous coal is the type of house coal that was once commonly used in open fires across the UK. It is a soft coal with a high volatile content, which means it produces a lot of smoke, soot, sparks and tar when burned. For this reason, traditional bituminous coal is no longer permitted for sale as a domestic fuel in England and is banned in smoke control areas.

Smokeless fuels such as Superflame Ovid are manufactured to burn much more cleanly than traditional bituminous coal. They are designed to produce very low levels of smoke, significantly less ash, and a more controlled, efficient burn. This makes them suitable for use in smoke control zones and a more responsible choice for home heating where coal is required.

Anthracite is another form of smokeless fuel and is a naturally occurring hard coal with a very high carbon content. Much of the anthracite used in the UK has traditionally been mined in Wales, where it has a long history as a premium domestic fuel. Anthracite burns extremely hot with a short flame, very little smoke, and minimal ash, making it one of the cleanest-burning solid fuels available.

While all solid fuels have an environmental impact, modern smokeless fuels and anthracite offer a far cleaner alternative to traditional bituminous coal, helping to reduce smoke, airborne particulates and visible pollution when used correctly in suitable closed appliances.
