What is Smokeless Coal and Anthracite?
Smokeless coal is a specially manufactured fuel designed to burn cleanly with very little visible smoke. It is approved for use in Smoke Control Areas and produces a high, steady heat output with minimal ash. This makes it a reliable and efficient choice for heating your home.
Anthracite is a naturally occurring form of hard coal, primarily sourced from Wales. It has a very high carbon content, which means it burns hotter and longer than ordinary house coal. Unlike traditional coal, smokeless fuels and anthracite do not produce thick smoke, sparks or excessive soot, making them cleaner and more controllable.
All of the smokeless fuels we supply in Truro meet current UK regulations and carry the Woodsure Ready to Burn certification. This guarantees they have been tested and approved for clean burning performance.
What is Coal For?
Coal is ideal if you have an open fire. It produces a strong, consistent heat and creates an attractive glowing bed of embers that lasts for hours. Once established, coal requires very little attention compared to logs, making it a convenient and dependable fuel during colder weather.
Smokeless coal and anthracite are particularly well suited to:
-
Open fireplaces
-
Multi-fuel stoves
-
Certain traditional solid fuel appliances
Unlike kiln dried logs, which burn best in a controlled wood-burning stove environment, coal performs extremely well in open fires where airflow is less restricted. It delivers long burn times, high heat output and excellent value, especially when purchased in multi-buy quantities.
If you are unsure whether smokeless coal or anthracite is right for your appliance in Truro, our team at Logan's Logs are always happy to offer advice.
Getting The Coal Fire Started
Use our natural firelighters and kiln dried kindling to get your coal fire started. Ensure your coal is dry as it won't light easily if moisture is present. Lay kindling on top of a bed of coal and mound more coal on top of that. Insert a wood wool firelighter among the kindling and light. Kiln dried kindling has a low moisture content so will light easily. It can help to add one or two kiln dried logs to your fire to start with in order to get the coals hot enough to glow.
Once glowing, the coal will burn slowly and hot. The temperature inside the fire could reach 1000 degrees hot making your room warm and home welcome.
Alternatives to Coal
If your home is not suitable for coal, there are alternatives. We sell heat logs made from compressed waste materials such as sawdust. These briquettes offer warmth on an open fire or wood burning stove at a low cost.
We also sell a range of kiln dried hardwood logs. Kiln dried firewood can be used in most settings but is best used in a wood burning stove. Firewood can also be used in pizza and bread ovens or along side our bbq charcoal for cooking outdoors.
We stock a range of bottled gas supplied by Flogas.

Logans logs are my favourite place to get logs from. They are best value around and the kiln dried logs are really dry. The drivers are very friendly and try to be helpful.

Really friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. Their wood always burns really well and gives off plenty of heat. Easy to get too if you want to collect your own. If you order in advance your order will be ready to collect when you get there.
