Wood Wool Firelighters
Our new Wood Wool Firelighters are completely natural, they are made from kiln dried softwood. To make wood wool, softwood is first put through a debarking machine which removes the bark from the tree.
Next, the bark-less lengths of wood are put onto a lathe which makes the long strands of wood wool, this is the put through a bath of hot natural wax which coats the wood wool and finally it goes through a winding machine which winds the wood wool into round bundles.
The long bundles of wound wood wool are cut to length, boxed and are ready to use.
It sounds like a complicated process but the machinery is in fact very simple and has been in use for many years. Our Wood Wool firelighters are made here in England, even the machines used are made in the UK, so we have a 100% British Made product.
The material used to make wood wool comes mainly from forest thinning. Thinnings are the small trees in managed forests that have very little light, these are removed to allow the larger trees to survive.
The larger trees do not have the competition from smaller trees, so they can grow to their natural size.
The thinning’s wood have no chemicals or preservative and no pesticides it’s just pure 100% naturally grown timber that might otherwise go to waste. The wax is a naturally occurring wax partly bees wax, this again has no additives.
Our Wood Wool firelighters have no chemicals no additives so completely natural, that’s why they are so good when lighting Pizza ovens, BBQ’s and cookers, there is nothing to contaminate the food or give it a bad taste, these are the best available.
We hand pack the Wood Wool firelighters in 50’s and in 200’s the weights are as follows:
- A box of 50 Weighs 445 grams including the box
- A box of 200 Weighs 1785 grams or 1.785kg including the box
One single Wood Wool firelighter will burn for approximately 5 to 8 minutes. To light a Kiln Dried Firewood fire, we use 2 to 3 Kiln Dried Logs, and small handful of our Kiln Dried Kindling and 2 to 3 firelighters to light the fire.
Because Wood Wool Firelighters are flammable, we suggest keeping them away from a heat source when not in use, a tin or fireproof container would be advisable. Keep them away from sources of ignition, as the name says, they are Fire Lighters. Better to be safe than sorry.
Wood wool firelighters have really taken over the market as the leading natural firelighter as they are produced from controlled forests in the uk from softwood trees.
Wood wool firelighters are made using wood from a process called “Thinning” which is one of the healthiest activities that can be done for a growing forest. Once trees have matured to a certain age they begin to compete with each other for nutrients, water and light. Full rows of trees are removed allowing the remining trees to grow to their full potential over the future years.
The wood is then Kiln Dried and shredded and mixed with natural wax to produce the wood wool firelighter.
Kiln Dried Kindling
Our Kiln Dried Kindling is made from virgin timber, often, this is from the forest when they carry out thinning of young trees, thinning’s are when the forester decides to remove the small trees that don’t have enough light, they would never develop into healthy trees anyway, removing the smaller trees allow the larger healthier trees to grow to their full potential, giving the forest a better canopy and allowing light to reach the larger trees.
Because the timber used is virgin clean wood there are no preservatives no chemicals, absolutely nothing gets into this wood, it’s clean.
When you burn our Kiln Dried Kindling there will be no chemical fumes. Our Kiln Dried Kindling is great for lighting BBQ’s Cookers, Pizza ovens Wood Burners open fires, in fact anything that needs lighting can be lit using our Kiln Dried Kindling.
Kindling wood is a vital component in fire starting, and selecting the right type can make all the difference. Kindling helps in the ignition process and sustains flames as larger logs are gradually added to create a robust fire.
Our Kiln Dried Kindling is approximately 175cm long or 7 inches long and measure approximately 20mm to 25mm in diameter and are packed in 3KG nets which are biodegradable, so good to recycle and dispose of. Our Kiln Dried Kindling has a moisture level of 8% down to 2% the lower the better, some Kiln Dried Kindling does not even register on the moisture meter.
Our Kiln Dried Kindling is made from softwood trees, often Larch or spruce is used, because this type of softwood has a naturally occurring resin, it helps with the lighting and fast burning, also the heat output is greater, which in turn makes lighting the fire that much easier.
When we light our fire in the office at Logans Logs we use approximately 8 to 10 pieces of Kiln Dried Kindling, 2 to 3 Wood Wool firelighters, once the kindling is lit, we put 2 to 3 Kiln Dried Logs on top, this takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes depending on your air flow and what you have it set at, then we close down the air supply allowing just a small flame, this will last for 3 to 4 hours of burning, we have a modern wood burner with a very good air flow gauge.
We sell well over 25.000 nets of Kiln Dried Kindling per year, so its proven to be the best available, year on year the sales keep coming.
