Does Cornish Sea Air Affect Firewood?
Sea air itself does not damage firewood, but the coastal conditions found throughout Cornwall can affect how well your logs burn if they are not stored correctly. The biggest challenge isn't the salt in the air—it's the higher humidity, frequent rainfall and damp conditions that are common in many coastal locations.
Wood naturally absorbs and releases moisture depending on its surroundings. If firewood is left uncovered or stored in a poorly ventilated area, it can gradually absorb moisture from the air. As the moisture content rises, the logs become harder to light, produce less heat and generate more smoke.
Kiln dried firewood is much better suited to coastal environments because it starts with a very low moisture content. Logan's Logs hardwood is kiln dried to an average moisture content below 18%, giving you a significant advantage over naturally seasoned logs. Even if the surrounding air is more humid, properly stored kiln dried logs will remain dry and burn efficiently.
The key to protecting your firewood is good storage. Keep your logs under cover, raised off the ground and somewhere with plenty of natural airflow. A purpose-built log store with open sides and a waterproof roof is ideal. Avoid wrapping your logs tightly in plastic or storing them in damp, enclosed spaces where condensation can build up.
Properties located close to the coast may also experience wind-driven rain. If your log store is exposed to prevailing winds, consider positioning it against a sheltered wall or fence while still allowing air to circulate freely around the sides of the stack.
Contrary to popular belief, salt carried in sea air does not soak into properly stored firewood or affect the way it burns. The real concern is preventing excess moisture from reaching the logs. As long as your firewood stays dry, you'll enjoy the same clean-burning performance whether you live on the coast, in the countryside or in the centre of a Cornish town.
