How long does it take for 1 log to burn?
The burn time of a log depends on the type of wood, its size, and how dry it is. Softwood logs such as pine or spruce burn quickly, often lasting only 30–45 minutes, while hardwoods like oak, ash, or birch burn much longer and produce more heat.
Because we only sell kiln dried hardwood logs, you can expect a single log to burn for around 1.5 to 2 hours under normal conditions. Kiln dried logs have a very low moisture content (below 18%), meaning they light easily, burn cleanly, and give off maximum heat with very little smoke or waste. See Woodsure Ready to Burn Certification.
While a softwood log might disappear quickly, a kiln dried hardwood log from us will give you a long, steady, high-heat burn, making it the most efficient and cost-effective choice for your fire.
Burn times vary in stoves vs open fires
The type of appliance you use also makes a difference. A modern, efficient wood-burning stove can extend burn times significantly (sometimes up to 2.5 hours per log) because it controls airflow and retains heat more effectively. An open fire, on the other hand, loses much more heat up the chimney and burns through logs faster, typically in under 1.5 hours.
So, while a softwood log might disappear quickly, a kiln dried hardwood log from us will give you a long, steady, high-heat burn, especially in a well-maintained stove, making it the most efficient and cost-effective choice for your fire.
