Is kindling on top of bottom?
It depends on the method you use, but the most efficient and modern way to light a fire is the “top-down” method, where the kindling goes on top of the larger logs. This approach creates a cleaner, longer-lasting burn and reduces smoke.
Top-down fire lighting method
- Start with larger logs on the bottom. Place 2–3 kiln dried hardwood logs flat at the base of your stove or fireplace.
- Add medium-sized split logs or sticks next. Lay a few smaller pieces of wood across the top of the larger logs, leaving some gaps for air to circulate.
- Place the kindling on top. Stack 6–8 pieces of dry kindling in a criss-cross pattern, then tuck a couple of natural firelighters or a twist of newspaper among them.
- Light from the top. The kindling catches first and burns downward through the smaller logs, gradually igniting the larger ones underneath.
The top-down method works best with kiln dried hardwood logs, as their low moisture content (under 18%) ensures they catch easily and burn evenly. This approach creates less smoke, gives off more heat from the start, and keeps your stove glass cleaner.
The older “bottom-up” method — where kindling and firelighters sit underneath the logs — still works, but it often produces more smoke and takes longer to reach a clean, efficient burn. For modern stoves and cleaner fires, always light from the top down.
