What log length do I need for a wood burner vs open fire?

For a wood burning stove, logs around 8–10 inches (20–25cm) are ideal. This size fits comfortably inside most stoves and allows good airflow for an efficient, controlled burn.

For an open fire, you can use slightly longer logs, typically 10–12 inches (25–30cm). Open fires have more space and aren’t as restricted by a firebox, so larger logs work well and can give a longer, steadier burn.

If you’re using both, 10-inch logs are a safe all-round option that work well in most situations.

Getting the Fire Started

Kindling & Firelighters

Choose from our range of affordable firelighters and kindling (sticks). Use these to build your fire before adding kiln dried logs.

Products like Wood Wool Firelighters are designed to ignite very easily when presented with a burning match and softwood kindling combusts easily in the early stages of your fire creating the necessary heat to burn larger hardwood logs later on. Our kiln dried logs are perfect for use in wood burners, providing a clean and efficient burn.
