How much firewood do I need per day?
The amount of firewood you’ll need each day depends on how often you use your fire, the size and efficiency of your stove, and the type of wood you burn. As a general rule, most households using a wood-burning stove for regular heating will go through around 6 to 10 kiln dried hardwood logs per day.
If you burn your stove for a few hours in the evening, you might use as little as 3 to 5 logs. However, if you’re running it all day to heat your home, that could rise to 10–15 logs per day, especially in colder months.
Here’s a rough guide to help you estimate daily firewood use:
- Occasional use (2–3 hours): 3–5 logs per day
- Regular use (5–6 hours): 6–10 logs per day
- All-day heating (10+ hours): 10–15 logs per day
Because we only supply kiln dried hardwood logs such as oak, ash and birch, you’ll get a longer burn and more heat per log compared to softwood or damp firewood. This means you’ll use fewer logs overall, making kiln dried wood the most efficient and economical choice for daily heating.
To plan ahead, a typical household using their stove regularly through the winter might need around 1.5 to 2 cubic metres of kiln dried hardwood logs for a full season of heating.
When ordering, choose the firewood size that suits your usage best:
- Occasional users: Buy nets or boot bags — our smallest quantities, perfect for weekend fires or occasional use.
- Regular users: Go for barrow bags — a convenient mid-sized option that offers great value and easy storage.
- Daily or all-day heating: Order a loose load or full crate for the best value per log and consistent supply through the colder months.
That way, you’ll always have the right amount of ready-to-burn kiln dried firewood on hand — no waste, no shortage, and maximum efficiency for your home.
