Are Ash and Beech logs suitable for wood-burning stoves and open fires?
Yes. Kiln-dried Ash and Beech logs are suitable for most wood-burning stoves and open fires, provided the appliance and chimney are designed for burning firewood and are kept in good condition. Both are established firewood species, producing strong heat and an attractive natural flame.
In a wood-burning stove, the combination works particularly well. Ash tends to catch relatively readily and develops a lively flame, while the density of Beech helps it burn steadily and form long-lasting embers. This makes the mix useful whether you want to warm a room quickly or maintain a comfortable temperature over a longer evening.
Begin with dry kindling and a suitable firelighter, leaving enough space for air to move between the pieces. Once the kindling is burning strongly, add one or two smaller hardwood logs. Larger logs should only be added after the stove and flue have warmed and a glowing fuel bed has formed. Avoid filling a cold stove with large logs, as this can suppress the fire and produce unnecessary smoke.
Ash and Beech can also be used on an open fire. They produce a traditional flame and a good bed of glowing embers, although an open fireplace will generally send more heat up the chimney than a modern stove. Always use a suitable fireguard, particularly where sparks or rolling logs could present a risk.
Whichever appliance you use, do not try to make the logs last longer by closing the air controls too far. Starving a wood fire of oxygen causes incomplete combustion, reducing useful heat and increasing smoke and deposits within the flue. A smaller, properly burning fire is preferable to an overloaded fire that is left smouldering.
You should also follow the appliance manufacturer’s instructions concerning log size, maximum fuel load and air control settings. Have the chimney swept at an appropriate frequency and keep carbon monoxide alarms correctly positioned and operational.
