How do Ash and Beech logs burn, and which wood produces more heat?
Both Ash and Beech are high-quality hardwood fuels, but they do not behave identically on the fire. Ash is particularly popular because it combines good heat output with relatively easy ignition. Beech is denser and can take slightly more effort to establish, but once burning it provides strong heat and a substantial bed of glowing embers.
In an Ash and Beech mix, these qualities complement one another. Smaller Ash pieces are useful when developing the fire because they tend to respond quickly once placed on hot kindling. As the fire becomes established, denser pieces of Beech help sustain the heat and strengthen the ember bed. You do not need to identify and separate every log: simply choose pieces by their size and weight according to the condition of the fire.
Customers sometimes ask which species produces more heat. In practice, moisture content, the amount of wood added and the way the appliance is operated can make a greater difference than the species name printed on the bag. A dry log burns more effectively because less of its energy is spent evaporating water. Airflow is equally important: even excellent hardwood will perform poorly if it is left smouldering in an appliance with insufficient oxygen.
Beech is a dense hardwood, so an individual Beech log may feel heavier and burn for longer than a similarly sized, lighter piece. Ash often provides a more immediate flame. This does not mean that every Beech log will always outlast every Ash log. Natural variations in diameter, shape, density and the position of the log within the fire will all influence its burning time.
To obtain the best performance, light the fire with kindling, add smaller logs first and wait until there is a healthy flame and glowing fuel bed before adding larger pieces. Add logs gradually rather than filling the entire firebox at once. Once a newly added log is burning properly, the airflow can be adjusted in accordance with the stove manufacturer’s instructions.
The result should be a bright, controlled fire rather than a smoky smoulder. Used correctly, an Ash and Beech mix provides the best attributes associated with hardwood firewood: strong heat, pleasing flames, dependable embers and a steady, comfortable warmth.
