What is the best way to store kiln-dried Ash and Beech logs?
Kiln-dried Ash and Beech logs should be kept dry, raised away from damp ground and surrounded by enough airflow to prevent condensation. Although kiln drying removes much of the wood’s moisture, the logs can absorb water again if they are left exposed to rain or stored in a persistently damp environment.
A purpose-built log store is ideal. It should have a waterproof roof, open or slatted sides and a raised base. The roof needs sufficient overhang to protect the upper and outer logs from driving rain. Open sides allow air to circulate through the stack, helping disperse moisture rather than trapping it around the wood.
A garage, shed or outbuilding can also be suitable if it is dry and ventilated. Avoid pressing the entire stack tightly against an external wall, as condensation or penetrating damp could reach the logs. Leaving a small air gap around the stack improves circulation and also makes it easier to inspect the building for dampness.
Logs should not be wrapped completely in an impermeable plastic sheet. Although plastic can keep direct rain off, it can also trap condensation if air cannot circulate underneath it. If a temporary cover is necessary, protect the top of the stack while leaving the sides open wherever possible.
Barrow bags and bulk bags are delivery containers rather than substitutes for a permanently weatherproof log store. If a bag must remain outside temporarily, place it on a dry, raised surface and protect it from rain. Large crates should also be positioned beneath cover or unpacked into suitable storage. Loose loads should be moved and stacked as soon as reasonably possible after delivery.
Bring only a modest quantity indoors at a time. A log basket near the stove is convenient, but firewood should not be stacked directly against the appliance or placed where heat could create a fire risk. Always maintain the clearances specified by the stove manufacturer.
Before burning a log, it should feel dry rather than damp or clammy. If you use a moisture meter, split the log and test the freshly exposed centre, as the outside surface alone may not represent the whole piece.
Correct storage protects the kiln-dried quality of your Ash and Beech logs, helping them light readily, burn effectively and deliver the clean, dependable heat for which hardwood firewood is valued.
