Why are Ash and Beech logs sold as mixed hardwoods?

Ash and Beech are both excellent hardwoods for domestic heating, and combining them creates a dependable supply of firewood with consistently good burning characteristics. Rather than relying on a single species, an Ash and Beech mix gives you the natural variation of real firewood with the heat, flame and burn duration expected from quality kiln-dried hardwood logs.

Ash is widely regarded as one of the best woods for burning. It lights relatively easily for a hardwood, produces an attractive flame and provides a strong, steady heat. Beech is a dense hardwood that burns hot and forms a good bed of glowing embers. Once the fire is established, these embers help maintain an even temperature and make it easier for subsequently added logs to ignite.

The precise proportion of Ash and Beech can vary between deliveries. This does not reduce the quality of the firewood: both species are suitable for wood-burning stoves, multifuel stoves and open fires. Mixing species also allows us to make responsible use of the quality hardwood available to us instead of rejecting suitable firewood simply because it is not one particular type of tree.

More important than the name of the species is the moisture content of the finished log. Wet firewood wastes energy evaporating water before it can heat your room. It can also produce excessive smoke, contribute to deposits in the chimney and make the fire difficult to control. An Ash and Beech mix therefore offers a very useful balance: Ash helps create a lively, responsive fire, while dense Beech supports sustained heat and a strong ember bed. Individual logs will naturally differ in shape, grain and burning speed, so you can select smaller pieces when building the fire and larger pieces once the appliance is hot.

For most households, the practical result is straightforward: reliable kiln-dried hardwood logs that light well, burn cleanly when used correctly and deliver plenty of useful heat.
