How do you light oak logs?

Oak logs are best lit by first creating a hot, well-established fire using dry kindling and firelighters. Because oak is a dense hardwood, it usually takes a little longer to catch properly than lighter woods such as birch, but once burning it produces strong, long-lasting heat.

The easiest way to light kiln dried oak logs is to begin with small pieces of dry kindling arranged loosely to allow plenty of airflow. Place a natural firelighter beneath the kindling and light it. Once the kindling is burning strongly, add a few smaller logs or lighter hardwood pieces before introducing larger oak logs.

Good airflow is very important when burning oak. Keep the stove vents open during the early stages of the fire so the flames can build heat quickly. Oak performs best once there is a hot bed of embers underneath the logs.

Many customers find that mixing oak with faster-lighting woods gives the best results. Birch and ash are particularly useful for getting the fire started quickly, while oak helps maintain a longer, steadier burn once the stove is hot.

To light oak logs successfully:

  • Use dry kindling and quality firelighters
  • Build the fire loosely so air can circulate
  • Keep stove airflow open while lighting
  • Start with smaller pieces before adding large oak logs
  • Allow a hot ember bed to develop
  • Use only properly kiln dried logs

It is important to avoid trying to burn wet or freshly cut oak. Oak naturally contains a high level of moisture when unseasoned, which makes it difficult to light and causes excess smoke. Kiln dried oak logs burn far more efficiently because the moisture content has been reduced.

Once the fire is established, oak becomes one of the best firewoods for long-lasting heat and steady burning performance. Although it can take a little more patience to light than some lighter woods, many stove owners prefer oak because the logs burn slowly and do not need replacing as often.

At Logan’s Logs, our kiln dried oak logs are supplied ready to burn, helping customers enjoy cleaner fires, dependable heat and efficient stove performance.

Getting the Fire Started

Kindling & Firelighters

Choose from our range of affordable firelighters and kindling (sticks). Use these to build your fire before adding kiln dried logs.

Products like Wood Wool Firelighters are designed to ignite very easily when presented with a burning match and softwood kindling combusts easily in the early stages of your fire creating the necessary heat to burn larger hardwood logs later on. Our kiln dried logs are perfect for use in wood burners, providing a clean and efficient burn.
