How long will a crate of hardwood oak logs last?

There's no single answer to this question because every household burns firewood differently. Some people light their stove for just a couple of hours on a chilly evening, while others rely on it as their primary source of heating throughout the winter.

What we can say with confidence is that a crate of oak logs will generally last longer than a crate of any other hardwood we sell.

Why does oak last so long?

Oak is one of the densest hardwoods available. That means each log contains more stored energy than lighter species, allowing it to burn slowly and produce long-lasting heat.

Although you may pay a little more for oak, you'll usually spend less time refilling your stove. Many customers find they use fewer logs over the course of an evening compared with faster-burning hardwoods.

How Long Will Your Supply Last?

The lifespan of a crate depends on several factors, including:

  • How many hours a day you use your stove.
  • The size and efficiency of your appliance.
  • The temperature outside.
  • Whether wood is your main source of heating or simply used to create a cosy atmosphere.
  • Whether you burn only oak or mix it with other hardwoods such as ash, birch or beech.

For some households, a crate may last several months. For others who heat their home almost exclusively with wood during winter, the same quantity may be used much more quickly.

Work Out Exactly How Much You'll Need

Rather than guessing, we've created a free Firewood Calculator to help estimate how much wood you'll need based on your home, stove and burning habits.

Whether you burn occasionally at weekends or rely on your wood burner every day throughout winter, our calculator will recommend the right quantity of logs for your needs.

Try our firewood calculator on the 'how much firewood will I need to get through winter' page.

If you're looking for the longest-lasting hardwood available, kiln dried oak is hard to beat. Its slow burn, excellent heat output and long-lasting embers make it one of the most economical choices for regular home heating, despite its higher purchase price.

Getting the Fire Started

Kindling & Firelighters

Choose from our range of affordable firelighters and kindling (sticks). Use these to build your fire before adding kiln dried logs.

Products like Wood Wool Firelighters are designed to ignite very easily when presented with a burning match and softwood kindling combusts easily in the early stages of your fire creating the necessary heat to burn larger hardwood logs later on. Our kiln dried logs are perfect for use in wood burners, providing a clean and efficient burn.
